Dizziness & Vertigo Care in Cranbourne
Dizziness or vertigo can be unsettling, especially when symptoms occur as you roll over in bed, tip your head back, or turn quickly. They may occur alongside neck pain, stiffness, or headaches, or begin after a fall, sporting injury, or car accident. Because dizziness can have many different causes, understanding what may be contributing to your symptoms is an important first step.
When Your Balance Signals Stop Matching Up
Balance relies on information from several parts of your body, including your eyes, inner ear, and neck. Together, these systems help your brain understand where your body is in space and keep you oriented as you move.
When information from these systems does not match, you may experience spinning, tilting, unsteadiness, or other forms of dizziness.
Vertigo describes a spinning or movement sensation specifically, while dizziness is a broader term that may also include lightheadedness, unsteadiness or feeling off balance.
Why the Neck May Be Part of the Picture
Chiropractic assessment can help determine whether neck function may be contributing to your symptoms. Dizziness may occur alongside:
- Changes in neck position, such as looking up, bending down, or turning quickly
- Neck pain or stiffness
- Headaches or balance difficulties
- A fall, sporting injury, or whiplash following a motor vehicle accident
- Stress or fatigue that intensifies existing symptoms
- Inner ear conditions such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
- Medication side effects, neurological conditions, or cardiovascular factors unrelated to the neck
Our role is to assess your presentation carefully and determine whether chiropractic care may be appropriate or another healthcare provider should be involved.
Signs It’s Time for an Assessment
Consider an assessment if dizziness is triggered by head movement, occurs with neck pain or stiffness, follows an injury, or persists, recurs, or affects your daily activities.
Some symptoms require urgent medical attention instead. If dizziness occurs with a sudden severe headache, difficulty speaking, facial weakness, double vision, loss of coordination, or chest pain, seek urgent medical care rather than booking a chiropractic appointment.
A Careful Assessment Before Care Begins
At Casey Chiropractic, we begin by discussing your symptoms, medical history, and factors that seem to trigger or relieve your dizziness.
Your examination may include assessing neck movement and function, balance and coordination, eye movements, and joint and muscle function. Neurological examination and positional testing may also be included where appropriate.
If we identify signs suggesting a condition outside the scope of chiropractic care, we will refer you to your GP, an emergency department, or another appropriate healthcare provider.
Where the assessment suggests that neck function may be contributing to your symptoms, we can discuss whether chiropractic care may form part of your overall management plan.
If BPPV is suspected or has previously been diagnosed, positional testing may also be appropriate. Where BPPV is identified, management may include a canalith repositioning manoeuvre such as the Epley manoeuvre.
Managing Dizziness Day to Day
Your individual circumstances will guide any recommendations we make. We may also discuss practical self-management strategies such as staying well hydrated, changing position slowly, gentle neck mobility, stress management, and getting adequate sleep.
